Site Visits/Field Trips
Purpose of a site visit
Site visits offer students a chance to explore an industry, discover potential careers, and learn about various job roles. These activities are designed to:
- Develop occupational knowledge.
- Provide insights into the education and training required to enter careers within the industry.
- Cultivate an understanding of the business's workforce and its impact on the community.
A site visit and a field trip differ in purpose, focus, and structure. A site visit is a structured activity designed to engage students in the Career Exploration stage of the work-based learning continuum. It provides authentic workplace experiences connected to career-related programs or courses. Students visit a workplace, meet employees, ask questions, observe work in progress, and learn about the business, its industry sector, and its role in the economy. Site visits are educationally rich and aligned with specific learning outcomes, with preparation and follow-up activities in the classroom, such as research and reflection.
In contrast, a field trip is a broader educational outing aimed at providing students with hands-on experiences outside the classroom. Field trips are often focused on general enrichment or exposure to cultural, historical, or scientific experiences rather than career exploration. They may include visits to museums, zoos, or cultural events always tied to specific learning outcomes. While both experiences are valuable, site visits are distinct in their career-focused approach and integration into work-based learning programs.
