Superintendent’s Update
 
Superintendent Jason Sample opened the meeting with a tribute to the late Lois Tinsson, a trailblazing educator and the sister of Board President Lillie Campbell. He also acknowledged President Campbell’s legacy as the first woman of color to serve as president of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA).
 
Student Leadership Takes the Spotlight
 
Students from the Superintendent Student Advisory Council (SSAC) delivered an impactful presentation focused on enhancing student life across GCC. Their key recommendations included:
  • Expanding student leadership opportunities, especially at non-traditional campuses.
  • Thoughtfully preparing for California’s Phone-Free Schools Act, which goes into effect in 2026.
  • Strengthening school communities through family engagement and support services.
 
Board members applauded the students for their thoughtful ideas and leadership throughout the year. A resolution recognizing SSAC members was approved and will be formally presented at a celebratory luncheon.
 
Futures High School Team Heads to Nationals
 
Futures High School students were recognized for earning first place at the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge. The winning team outperformed 44 other regional competitors and will advance to the national competition in Atlanta this summer.


EPIC’s Annual Board Presentation Showcases Strong Progress
 
EPIC Charter School presented its annual report, highlighting:
  • Significant growth in math and English Language Arts, especially among English learners.
  • Continued success as a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School.
  • Innovative career exploration efforts, including STEM field trips and VR simulations.
  • Integrated IB instruction and a positive school climate driven by community support.
Board members commended the staff and leadership for fostering a school environment where students feel engaged and supported.
 
Dashboard Data Shows Momentum in Key Areas
 
The board received an update on the California School Dashboard, which reports performance in areas like academics, attendance, and English learner progress. Highlights included:
  • Most schools reduced chronic absenteeism, thanks to improved outreach and family support.
  • GCC continues to outperform state averages in key subgroups, including English learners and Latino students.
  • New dashboard indicators—such as science proficiency and long-term English learner progress—are now part of annual reviews.
Staff shared plans to continue refining supports and using this data to inform school plans.
 
Board Approvals and Actions
 
The board also approved:
  • Updated curriculum for SAVA for the 2025-26 school year
  • Property purchase agreement for COA Middle School
  • Memorandum of Understanding with Twin Rivers Unified School District for facilities modernization
  • Revised Independent Study policy
  • Updated salary schedule and new positions for the 2025–26 school year
