Dear GCC Staff,
I hope you continue to stay healthy and take care of yourselves and loved ones during this time. It has been a personal joy to connect with so many of you during the Superintendent’s Spring Presentations and seeing your smiling faces. Today, I am writing to update you regarding the impacts of COVID-19 over the course of the next month.
1) Planning for Next School Year
I understand you may have many questions following Governor Gavin Newsom’s press conference this week that referenced the possibility of reopening schools for the 2020-2021 school year as early as July to make up for the loss of learning. We believe this directive is in direct response to the delay in providing instruction in most traditional districts. It is our belief that our timely and successful implementation along with planning for summer school will relieve us from a July start. As we are in the process of developing plans for the summer and next academic year, we will continue to monitor the latest guidance and information from our state and county leaders. Our Cabinet team will be developing plans for multiple school reopening scenarios that account for the specific learning needs of students following this period of school closure. As these plans come to fruition and we receive additional guidance from public health officials, we will communicate more information.
2) Shelter-in-Place Order
On Monday, the Sacramento County Department of Health along with Yolo County announced the extension of the shelter-in-place order through the end of May amid the COVID-19 pandemic. More information is expected to be released next week, including the possible easing of some restrictions. As we await the new guidance from public health officials, we also want to provide staff with information on what to expect for the remainder of this academic year and summer school. While we do not know what the easing of restrictions will look like or how it will impact our day-to-day work, we expect county leaders to follow a gradual reopening process. Any easing of restrictions is likely to be implemented in phases.
Thank you for the work you are all doing to ensure our students have the supports they need during this unprecedented time. We will continue to keep you informed as we receive new guidance or information regarding the easing of any restrictions.
Finally, we are looking forward to seeing you at the “virtual” GCC End of Year event on May 15, 2020 at 1:30pm! More information will be shared with you over the next few weeks.
Have a great weekend!
