Dear GCC Staff,
I know I speak for each of you when I say we all continue to wish for a return to a ‘normal’ school experience – we miss our students and our colleagues and the sense of community that was shared before COVID – 19. Unfortunately I have no good news to share in that arena.
As you are probably all aware of at this time, Wednesday the State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, stated that he did not think students would be able to return before the end of the school year. On Wednesday, Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed that schools should not be reopening for the rest of the school year to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
Today, GCC is joining all the other Sacramento and Yolo County School Districts, and the Sacramento and Yolo County Offices of Education in announcing that we are keeping our campuses closed through the end of the school year to support the coronavirus mitigation effort. While the physical campuses may be closed, school is NOT and we will continue to provide high quality educational programs for all of our students in a variety of ways per campus. The decision to keep our campuses closed was made at the recommendation and guidance of both the Sacramento County and Yolo County Health Officers. Please know, this decision was not made lightly, but in due to the severity of the situation, and the guidance given it was a necessary decision.
School is far from over. We’ve got Spring Break this next week and then we will all be right back at it for the sake of our students and their futures. The outstanding work you have done over the course of the last three weeks is noteworthy and I want to personally affirm each one of you. You have stepped up and remained student focused during this challenging time. It is my hope and desire that you take the spring break week to relax , rest and practice self care so that together we can come back fresh and ready to take on the last weeks of this memorable 19-20 school year.
Extraordinary times call for extraordinary effort and courage -and each of you have shown that again and again. Thank you for your continued patience with navigating this unknown path. I am so very grateful for your dedication and commitment during this time.
